The Shimadzu GC-2010 Plus gas chromatograph uses a flame ionization detector and is equipped with a Frontier Pyrolyzer. This is a workhorse teaching instrument equipped with a titanium cup pyrolysis system that is capable of two stage pyrolysis. We use this instrument mainly for teaching comparison interpretation of spectra of commonly seen polymers in forensic casework, such as plastics, fibers and paints.

The Shimadzu QP5050 gas chromatograph mass spectrometer is controlled by GCMS Solutions software. This instrument uses an electron impact detector and has a full library to identify materials. Capable of preforming qualitative and quantitative analysis, this tool is hardly out of commission. We use this instrument for teaching the analysis of drugs, explosives and fire residues.

The Thermo Scientific GCMS consists of a Trace GC Ultra and a DSQ II mass spectrometer, and is equipped with a Gerstel MPS 2 autosampler assembly. This autosampler is capable of performing liquid injection, headspace, and solid phase microextraction analysis. Various methods of sample introduction enhance sensitivity and allow for the analysis to be tailored to the analyte of interest. Currently this research instrument is used for the analysis of explosive residue, pseudo-explosives, fly pupae, racing fuel, and nicotine in a hair matrix.

The Thermo Scientific liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer consists of an Accela autosampler, pump, and PDA detector, as well as a Thermo Scientific MSQ Plus mass spectrometer. The concept is similar to gas chromatography, however, solvent combinations are used to transport the sample instead of a gas. Coupled with the fact that ambient temperatures are commonly used, compounds that are not able to be analyzed by GC, due to thermal instability for example, can be detected and identified using this technique. This instrument is used for research purposes to detect analytes such as explosives, fiber dyes and nicotine.

This is an Evolution 210 Thermo Scientific UV-Vis Spectrometer that is useful in forensic chemistry teaching laboratory exercise. This type of analysis is used as a presumptive test in illicit drug analysis to detect absorbance in the Ultraviolet and Visible regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.
